Derby Hospitals Rewarded for its Green Credentials

We are proud to announce that Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing its carbon emissions by nearly 4%. HCP currently provide SPV Management at the Hospital and have worked closely with all service providers and the Trust, to achieve these significant savings.

The Carbon Trust Standard is a mark of excellence that is awarded to organisations for measuring, managing and reducing their carbon emissions and committing to make further reductions year on year. It is valid for two years and is the world’s first such award.

In total Derby Hospitals has cut its carbon emissions by 1,198 tonnes of CO2equivalent, which is equivalent to 1 year of electricity and gas for 160 homes.

Paul Brooks, head of facilities management, said: “We are very proud to have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard. It shows our patients, visitors and staff that we are serious about taking action on climate change through real carbon reduction.

“Going through the assessment process to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard helped us to not only quantify our footprint, but also benchmark our performance and identify areas for improvement. We have already cut our carbon emissions by nearly 4% - we estimate that this will save us around £180,000 - as part of the initiative and are committed to making further reductions in the future.”

Prime Ministers David Cameron and Frederk Reinfeldt visit The Royal
London Hospital project

The Royal London Hospital project was host to a visit by the UK and Swedish prime ministers on 25 November 2010. The Royal London hospital is part of the £1bn PFI redevelopment project for Barts and The London hospitals, which is being managed by HCP.

The visit gave both PMs the chance to see firsthand a great example of UK/Swedish cooperation.

During a tour of the facility, Mr Cameron spoke to staff working on the project, including HCP’s Regional Director Jane Sansome, who explained the timing of the opening of the facility, the design of the theatres and how the building will be commissioned in readiness for the first patients.

HCP provide SPV (special purpose vehicle) Project Management and were commissioned by Skanska to support the Clinical Planning of the hospital.

The new hospitals programme will replace many of the hospitals’ ageing buildings with state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to rival the best in Europe.

HCP is delighted to report that the Peterborough Acute Hospital was successfully handed over on 1 October 2010 to the Trust, ahead of the scheduled completion date.

Winner announced for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Cancer Treatment Centre
competition

HCP Social Infrastructure (UK) Ltd, Anshen & Allen Associates, Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and Laing O’Rourke Construction are the winning team in the competition to design a new Cancer Treatment Centre for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Launched in February 2010, the competition sought teams with the capacity and imagination to design and deliver a ‘world-class facility’ that would provide an outstanding patient experience and working environment.  The new building will be the first in a phased development that will ultimately produce an Integrated Cancer Centre, combining first-class clinical care with groundbreaking medical research.  Architects and contractors were required to collaborate from day one, and the competition followed a multi-stage process which at the final stage invited teams to come up with design concepts for the new building.

Anshen Allen/Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners/Laing O’Rourke’s winning design is based around the idea of breaking the building down into five three-storey ‘villages’ stacked up on the corner of the site.   The judges concluded this to be an intelligent and well-considered design, offering a clear strategy that will allow the building to respond to short, mid- and long-term change.
