28/10/09 - First major milestone approaches for Barts and The London New Hospitals programme

The first phase of the new hospital at Barts, in the City of London, part of the £1bn development programme for Barts and The London NHS Trust is nearing completion.

The project is the largest of its kind in the world and will replace many of the hospitals’ existing ageing buildings with state-of-the-art facilities to rival the best in Europe. These will be across two main sites, Barts Hospital in the City of London, and The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

HCP, who are providing management services to the project, are working closely with the New Hospitals team at the Trust and the service providers to choreograph a complex series of moves that will take place over the coming months and will see cancer services transferred from their current location to the new centre. In addition, HCP are ensuring that a regular stream of communication is taking place to help prepare staff for the move and understand about the changes to working practices that will be needed to make the most of the new space.

The Royal London Hospital provides district general hospital services for the City and Tower Hamlets and specialist tertiary care services for patients from across London and beyond. Britain’s biggest new hospital will include London’s leading trauma and emergency care centre, one of Europe’s largest renal services and one of the UK's biggest paediatric services, provided within a dedicated Women and Children’s Hospital.

Barts Hospital will become a Cancer and Cardiac Centre of Excellence, incorporating services from The London Chest Hospital. The state-of-the-art facilities for cancer will complement the existing Breast Care Centre, and patients will be investigated or treated for heart disease using the most up-to-date equipment.

The project is being delivered in three main phases at each hospital, the first of which is the new cancer centre at Barts. This building will be handed over to the Trust on 16th March 2010, and then, after a short period of commissioning become operational. The new cancer centre will be one of the most advanced in the UK.

The first phase of The London will be handed over in winter 2011 and the full redevelopment programme will be completed by February 2016.

05/10/09 - HCP Acquire NewSchools

On 1st October 2009 HCP completed the transaction to acquire NewSchools, and as such our two companies have now come together. This landmark day will enable HCP to build on its 12 year success in hospital development and expand further into social infrastructure. The NewSchools portfolio will add to the HCP smaller number of education projects, and together means we have 31 projects under management (16 health projects, 9 school projects, 2 court projects, 1 social housing project and 1 tram project). This will expand by 3 additional school projects in the next six months.

The consultancy arm of both companies will continue to operate as now, and continue to provide long term cooperative relationships with our NHS and education partners. Our goal and purpose remains to excel in providing workable, evidence based solutions that positively contribute to quality environments where professional expertise can flourish.

Gerry Green takes over as Executive Chairman for HCP, which will continue to be run on regional lines, with central technical support and consultancy teams for project development in both Education and healthcare.

HCP has been built on knowledgeable individuals successfully supporting professionals in their field. The acquisition of NewSchools allows us to broaden this approach into Social Infrastructure to better contribute to public services, which evidently improve the care and learning environment, and foster excellence in the staff providing these services.

02/10/09 - Pembury Hospital, Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells

The Pembury scheme involves the construction of the new 65,000 sq/m Pembury Hospital for the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust at a cost of £236m. The new hospital will provide all inpatient accommodation in 512 single en-suite bedrooms; making it the first NHS acute hospital of its kind in the UK. As part of a successful consortium, HCP are providing project lead, clinical lead and operational SPV management.

Building started in April 2008 and the new hospital will be constructed on the site of the existing Pembury Hospital in 2 phases. The first phase builds the hospital on a cleared part of the site, allowing the existing services to continue throughout, and then transfer into the new hospital. Phase 2 involves demolition of the vacated buildings, landscaping and car parking.

As of October 2009, the construction progress is exceptional. The main superstructure is virtually complete and of the four original tower cranes on site only two remain. Internally many sections of the hospital have now had mechanical and electrical services installed, and at present the medical gas infrastructure is being connected. Many of the internal walls are now installed and second siding is now underway, making it easy to appreciate the size of the rooms, particularly the operating theatres. Lead lining is currently taking place in the radiology areas, and the steel shielding for the MRI is complete.

The Pembury Hospital is unique in its design, incorporating specific patient safety and infection control features and maximising the benefits of its rural setting in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The hospital, by its location and design provides stunning patient accommodation which sets new standards for the patient environment in the NHS.

29/07/09 - West Cumberland Hospitals NHS Trust - Whitehaven

HCP will be working along side Laing O'Rourke and the design team of Gilling Dodd architects and John Cooper Architecture to provide new facilities for patients at the West Cumberland Hospital NHS trust in Whitehaven.

The North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust chief executive Carole Heatly said: “In selecting Laing O’Rourke, we have an understanding that they will use the local workforce as much as possible – this is good news especially in times of economic recession and should do much to strengthen the local economy of West Cumbria.”

It is expected that early preparatory work on the site will start before Christmas this year to allow for the major construction to begin in 2010.

The new facility will have over 200 beds in 100% single rooms as well as new facilities for emergency care, theatres, intensive and coronary care and support accommodation. 08/07/09 - Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital – Ongoing refurbishment programme

As part of its ongoing operational role, HCP has recently overseen the refurbishment by its service providers, Serco, of two key areas of the Hospital, the West Atrium and Jenny Lind Children’s Assessment Unit. (CAU)

Refurbishment of the West Atrium follows on from the refurbishment of the East atrium which was undertaken in 2008. As the West Atrium houses the Hospital’s main restaurant and servery area timing was crucial and the work was undertaken over a four week period incorporating Easter. A temporary restaurant facility was housed in a marquee during the period of work which was completed within the scheduled time programme.

The Jenny Lind CAU was decanted onto a ward area for a six period whilst the refurbishment was carried out and was handed back to the Trust at the beginning of July. The work involved detailed collaboration with the Hospital’s Arts Project to theme the whole area to create a more colourful and vibrant environment which has been favourably received by all parties.

Both schemes are examples of the strong continuing working relationships which HCP have with both the Trust and Serco.
